This season

Just a few musings of this season...

In becoming the true self, one must continually re-evaluate; identify patterns - both positive and negative - true highs, true lows and move forward. Self-improvement can only come from learning from lessons of the past - again both the good and the bad.

I have come to realise that in this season, my schedule is quite hectic - I have taken on quite a bit, with several goals to achieve, which take more work than I have ever had to put in, on a daily basis. Life is a constant push; like running a race, you must push on if you want to achieve goal X or goal Y or goals X, Y and Z! (the number of days I have felt like I was back in school running that cross-country race!)

I have also learnt that I need to stop focusing on the difficulties I face - "gosh I only slept for X hours last night" or "things are hectic" or what ever comments or experiences I share in a less than positive light. Thing is, life has no pre-determined course, as school does; and whilst the conditioning of school days is still very much apparent; I have to realise the course of life is self-determined. I cannot be speaking of things being tough, when in actuality; I have chosen this path; no one has chosen it for me. Whereas in school you needed to do X, Y and Z to get in to a good uni, or get good grades; in life the choices you make are bigger than that - they will literally change your life - and to emphasise it even more, you are in control. Do not fall prey to the challenges you have set up for yourself. They are your challenges.

It's funny, I came to realise this when I truly looked at the schedules of the lives of my close friends. They are getting on well, yet have very different schedules.

So at the end of the day I need to take more control over what I want to achieve, yes it may be tough; but it's the path I have chosen; there may be some things that I will shed off in future; but for now I have chosen to pursue them.

Now this message is something you here constantly - you are in control of your destiny; make a plan for your life etc. But sometimes it does take time before those messages truly resonate with you - believe you me; I can be quite stubborn so whilst I know a lot about what I should do; if it does not resonate with me on a personal level, then it is just that- knowledge.

"No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid" - Lupita Nyong'o

Here is another case of resonance on a personal level. Truth is, I am one of those people who can only really believe something can happen, when I see someone like me or with whom I associate my self with. To be honest I think that may be the case with most people. Anywho, the recent awards season that was abuzz with Lupita Nyong'o set ablaze (or at least a warm glow) the hearts of many who associate themselves with her- the dark skinned woman, the creative at heart growing up in a less than encouraging environment; the African, the Kenyan, the Nairobian, the Luo etc. The thing is, if you have a grown up in an environment where you have felt a tad ostracised from a certain community, nothing speaks more to you than seeing what you feel is a representation of your self, being globally applauded and appreciated for works of your passion - no matter where you are from, your dreams a valid.

Now it is very reason that I wanted to come back home after my undergrad degree in Bristol, UK. Stuff was happening back home that I wanted to be a part of - stuff that I resonated with, that represented me. I am so happy to see things develop and progress in the expression of self-love in my country and continent - and I can see things moving towards a sense of normalcy; a norm in the appreciation of our works and the continual self-improvement of our works. It is truly heart-warming and awakens a sense of can-do and validity in your life aspirations - no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.

With an attitude like that, the knock-on effects are priceless.

Back to Basics

Hellloooo!! ....and Happy New Year!!

Hope you're all having a fabulous start to the year :) So I have quite a few things to say today...

To start off I did a proper evaluation of my wardrobe, threw out stuff that I really should not be wearing - things that were way past their best by date; the best move to make sure I get some decent replacements :) From jeans, to dresses, to well the more discreet items in our wardrobes :p. Anywho, what I came to realise was.....I have far too may "patterned" items of clothing and I tend to wear only my basics. The rest of the other stuff is really quite hard to wear, I would look like a hot kaleidoscope mess. Now; there is a right way to wear patterns:

So this year, well at least for the first bit of it, I am going back to basics. Getting some key pieces I can actually mix and match, stuff that I can wear for days on end! Thrift shopping has become my thing and unfortunately the thrill of finding things at such a good deal means I end up with some pieces I never end up wearing :-/. So this year, I think I need to add the following pieces to my wardrobe:

ASOS Trousers With Cuff Hem Vila Marl Sweat TopTed Baker Peplum Detail TopWarehouse Western Shirt In Acid WashASOS Skater Dress With Slash Neck And Short SleevesASOS Shirt Dress With Colour Block PanelsASOS Skater Dress With Ballet Wrap and 3/4 SleeveASOS T-Shirt Dress With Dipped Back HemASOS Pleated Skirt in Leather Look
MOTO Black Acid Wash Leigh JeansMOTO Supersoft Skinny Leigh JeansMOTO Dark Khaki Supersoft Skinny Leigh JeansRiver Island Flat Chain BeltClean Leather Tote

I have also lined up quite a few goals in work, dance, experience and personal development.

Work - In the next months I want to get a hold of things in the new department I work in now. I will improve my report writing skills, proposal writing skills and have more client engagement. I will also lock down how to roll out the project I have been working on for a while now and work to roll out another of its kind (which will hopefully be an easier task given experience thus far).

Dance - Engage in more dance. Work on two dance projects, get my intermediate ballet exam passed and passed well; apply for my teaching course and get my teaching hours.

Experience - Save money to travel with the bf beyond borders! Last year we had the best trip to Mombasa ever; that was probably the most rewarding trip  ever! Paid for our flights and decent hotel accommodation, got to eat out at some great restaurants, tour old town and the market and go jet skiing!!

Personal development - In order to make the experience happen, I have set out a budget to work with for the next 6 months after which I will review it. I will be saving up for future plans and for an investment I am making to reel in more mulla.

What are your plans for 2013?

Jessie Ware + Delilah

Been listening to Jessie Ware and ummm....I love her music!! So refreshing:

Ooh and Delilah; again, refreshing music:

October musings

Just a few snippets of October thus far! It's been quite eventful so far; went for the Swahili Fashion Week Nairobi Showcase which was a good evening - some great creativity. That said Patricia Mbela took the show - definitely set the standard for the rest of the designers! Great cut, fit, creativity and true elegance - I loved the way she highlighted the structural beauty of the shoulder blades:

As we're talking fashion, thought I'd share a few "new" pieces that I'm absolutely loving

This week was quite excting....I got to travel to Rwanda!! Kigali, to be specific. Was so excited for this trip...apart from the work to be done, I really wanted to get a feel of life in a fellow East African nation. Here are a few snippets of le pays des milles collines :)

Ooh and I noted that nothing was packed in plastic bags in Nakumatt...

and Mr. Price...!

On my last day there I got to visit the Rwanda Genocide Memorial, which was quite educational; I decided to get a book to learn a bit more about its history:

To top off the week, I attended a gala for one of the projects I've been working on. They went all out to say the least! Funtimes all round :)

That's all for now - have a lovely week :)
